Less things to say
When I started blogging years ago, I have tons of things to say. And I guess I might been vomiting anything that came to my head without too much thought if anyone find them boring or not. I was so inspired that I had to post everything. Somehow it's just easier back then because everything seemed new and I might have thought sharing whatever I want is better than not sharing anything at all. There's a different mentality then, I suppose.
These days there are still things I want to share but I guess not as much as before so I mostly don't share them. Plus, I forget easily. One moment I have an idea and then I lost it the next because I didn't write it down. So less posts, less blogging, pretty much less of everything. I'm okay with it but I guess I'm losing readers for lack of new posts. But at least I have seven or so readers so I'm not talking to myself or so I think.
If you're a long-time blogger, do you find you have less things to post now compare to when you first started blogging?

4th Blog Anniversary
In one of my anniversary posts, I had said I had actively blogged with 33 blogs (not at the same time of course) and that is true. But if you do the math, which I hate doing, it's like I had two blogs per year. I have no idea why I keep changing blogs. There is the usual need for newness but I could have stayed at my first blog and keep renaming it but it wouldn't be the same as getting a new url. Maybe it's foolish to want to match url with the name of your blog but it makes sense to do that right?
Blogging is not my life but it's part of my life. It's always joyful (and occasionally stressful) for me to keep blogging because I find no other platform that suits me. Social medias such as twitter or facebook is just not my cup of tea. I think I'm at the slow lane when it comes to being social. I'm slow to keep up with trends, slow to find anything out, slow to process my thoughts on anything and when I do settle on something, the moment would have passed and there would be no need to post about that something. It's not terrible to be on the slow lane because I have company (other bloggers) and I enjoy their company.
I started this blog you're reading on July 17, 2021 and this year makes it 4 years old today. I like to make a note of this phenomenon of staying in the same url for a bit longer than some of my other blogs but that's due to my laziness because setting up a new blog takes work and I can be lazy about such things.
Postcards from the Bookstore is exactly what it states as I do buy postcards from bookstores. Reading and scribbling or scribbling and reading remains what I do on this blog – reading books and scribbling stories or artworks and maybe a new thought now and then. I wish I can say I added something new idea or new kind of posts to this blog but I didn't. I guess I have not changed my blogging ways even after all these years. I suppose what keeps me blogging is all the challenges (like the a-z challenge in April) or the memes or prompts (like Words for Wednesday) because my blog is dull without them.
But blogging, yes, I believe I'll keep doing it because what else I'm going to do with my pitiful thoughts and ideas and stories? Can't store them in my computer forever. Can't eat them either. Let's hope I don't quit this blog and start a new one. Happy 4th blog anniversary! May we all stick together in this slow lane for a long while.
How long have you been blogging? And what keeps you blogging?

Why do you blog?
These days, I blog may be out of habit, out of obligations, out of boredom or just because I can. It may be because I've been blogging so long, whatever I expect or want from blogging is whatever is there at the moment. In other words, I'm so used to blogging, I don't need a reason to do it anymore, I just do it.
How about you? Why do you blog?
July 17, 2024
Are you a blogger?
If you have a blog and you keep putting content into it, are you a blogger? I would say yes to this but then it might not be true. There was someone who was an author but he had a blog but he insisted he was not a blogger. He even had comments turned off. So is he a blogger?
I guess blogger is just a title, much like author or actor. And it's no big deal but I think it's a big deal for those who blog. I wouldn't call myself a blogger but I might do so since there is no other word for someone who slacks at blogging but still blogs.
If you have a blog, do you consider yourself a blogger?
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Today, July 17, is the 3rd anniversary of this blog you're reading. I don't really do much celebrating of any kind but I like to make a note of this phenomenon since I have a bad habit of moving to new urls. Blogging is not my life but it's part of my life so I'll probably continue doing it for a long while. Let's hope I stay put here and not move to a new url. Happy 3rd anniversary, dear blog.

Is it still a blog if commenting is turned off?
As a blog reader, I don't want to be sending emails or filling out a message box to make a comment on a post. It creates a detachment from the post. Also, without comments, you don't get to see what others said nor interact with them. It feels like there are no readers or that everyone's invisible except the blogger and that's weird. But maybe it's a matter of preference?
What do you think? Is it still a blog if commenting is turned off?

Length
How long is too long a post? With social media, supposedly, you write shorter posts but with blogs, it can be any length. Not that I tested it much but I do know less than 3,000 words is possible for a blog posts (at least on Blogger).
There was an article/post I read where in the beginning, it tells you how long it takes to read that post and I'm sure that's useful to some people but for me, it just add to the length of the post. Are we so lacking in time that we need to time our reading even of a single article/post? But I don't think such things are accurate anyway because there are readers who are slower at reading or maybe they need to look up words or they find reading on a screen harder than most.
I think my posts (I don't always check the length) are pretty decent length, perhaps under 800 words but my fiction posts are longer but I always try to keep it under 2,000 words because any longer, it would feel like you're reading a book. For long posts, I use the Read more feature (my says Continue reading) so readers can just see a snippets of those posts when they browse my blog.
Of course, this does not include photos/images. Photos/images can add to the length visually. It really helps to have some sort of division between posts so people will know where a post ends. Sometimes I find this unclear.
I don't mind reading long posts but I sometimes skim if it is boring because I have short attention span. But I always read every word if I'm really interested.
As a blogger, do you set your posts length? As a reader, do you care if a blogger's post is long?
P.S. This post is 337 words including the title, at least, according to my text app. According this calculator, it takes 1 minute and 41 seconds to read this.

Excuse me while I pretend to blog
Not that I need an excuse not to blog but sometimes it seems I reason myself out of posting this or that for reasons that may be considered dumb when I really think about it. Maybe I think too much about a post before posting and maybe I don't think enough. Whatever excuse not to post, it's probably not as dumb as I think or maybe it is. I still have more excuses not to post than to post.
If you're a blogger, do you need excuses not to post something or are you the type who are willing to share just about everything with your readers?

Possible matters to overthink
01 - Wordpress only? I decided I won't open a wordpress account just to post comments on wordpress blogs that only allow wordpress users & social media (twitter and facebook). So perhaps that's a bad idea and perhaps I'm being bias. But if a wordpress blogger only wants wordpress (and social media) users to comment on their blog, aren't they being biased against readers like me who does not use wordpress or social media?
So yes, it's pretty easy to open a wordpress account and signing in is not a complicated task but why should I have to sign up/sign in to leave comments on any blogs? I think it would be nice if everyone just uses the name/blog link (url) option but Blogger probably won't switch to that so I'll never have that option but wordpress users have that option right? I'm not a wordpress user but I would assume they have the option to allow all kind of readers to leave comments and not just wordpress & social media users.
02 - Nobody uses Blogger? — There is a blogger who said in a post, 'nobody really uses Blogger as a blogging platform anymore' and that new bloggers would go straight to free Wordpress. (This person uses Wordpress). This makes me kind of sad and a little angry (okay, more angry than sad) because I'm using Blogger and I don't think that's true. How does this person know if new bloggers would go to Wordpress and not to Blogger? How does person know if people are not using Blogger? Where did they get their information from?
So yes, people can have their opinions but this didn't sound like an opinion, this sounds like they are stating a fact. And by saying that, they are telling people to use Wordpress, right? I mean, if I'm a new blogger and see this comment, I would think I should use Wordpress instead of Blogger. So I'm bias so you can't trust me if I recommend Blogger to you instead of Wordpress. But trust me when I say people are using Blogger even if no one believes it.
What do you think? Should bloggers pick their readers? Are people using Blogger? Does any of these things matter?

This might be a boring post
Even with many years of blogging, it's still a bit hard to decide what to post. I don't particularly post anything that you might call a niche. I talk about books I read, shows & movies I watch, my fiction writing, random life things and very occasionally, my art. If I have to categorize my blog, it would be under personal blog which I think defines a blog that talks just about anything but that's probably not the right definition.
Years ago, I wouldn't even think about the readers or whether a post will interest them but now I find it's so easy to get into the habit of too much thinking and not a lot of blogging. Of course, I don't cater to readers because that's not why I blog but sometimes when I have a post idea, I think about whether it will interest readers. It's nice to post something readers might enjoy just because it's nice to treat your readers.
I think it was easier to blog when I was a new blogger because I can just whip up a post and send it out there and not feel one bit dumb about it. Experience hasn't taught me how to blog on a regular bases so I'll just be posting random things at random times and try not to worry that I'm might be going the inverse road where I'm becoming less and less good at blogging.
What about you? If you're a blogger, do you think about whether what you post will interest readers?

Do Blogs Need Readers?
01 - Do blogs need readers? The answer is probably no because a blog can exist without readers. But why would you create a blog if not for someone to read it and respond to it? Long-time bloggers, new bloggers, they all want readers, right? I know I do because I don't want to be talking to myself on my blog (which I probably am most times.) So I welcome readers. I welcome comments, good or bad, long or short. Getting responds/comments is the best thing about blogging. It shows we're not posting in vain.
02 - Maybe after blogging for so many years, I'm too lazy to work on building an audience and I'm tired of trying to get readers to come to my blog. Often, I find having hundreds of readers versus just a few, makes little difference. Or maybe I don't care as much as I used to or maybe I'm just lazy.
03 - Often times I find most bloggers fear losing readers especially when they go on a hiatus/blog break. I have the same fear but then again, I go on a hiatus every week. But I do understand why some bloggers apologize for their absence or lack of posts when they do go on a hiatus. Readers can forget about your blog if you don't post regularly but I believe as long as you're blogging and as long as you're commenting on blogs, you will have readers. But then again, that might be foolish thinking. Readers can come when they want to. Readers can leave when they want to. No one's in control of readers except readers.
04 - I really like the 'you comment on my blog and I return a comment on your blog' method of blogging but I don't think you have to comment for the sake of returning a comment and I don't think you should match (the amount), comment for comment either. I hope that people return comments because they sincerely want to and not because they are obligated to do so. And sometimes it's just nice to return comments.
05 - I'm a picky, moody reader who habitually doesn't leave comments even when I want to. If I don't comment, it's not because I've stopped liking your blog. There are times I write comments and then delete them without posting them for reasons I don't always know. I think most times, I say irrelevant things unrelated to the post I'm commenting on or perhaps I think what I say might offend the blogger. I have lots of excuses for not leaving a comment but most of them are frivolous. Sometimes I think whatever I say means very little.
06 - I don't know why a reader would just stop coming around. A few reasons that I can speculate is I didn't comment on their blog or I didn't comment enough on their blog or I offend them somehow (I'm too timid to say anything offending but who knows what can offend someone) or they have forgotten to come by or simply they are no longer interested in what I post. I can go on and on but who needs a reason to stop doing something?
07 - What keeps me from being a loyal readers is readability, content and if something offends me. If I have trouble reading your blog, it's likely I wouldn't return a second time. I'm sorry to say white or color text on black or dark background has been hard for me to read so I avoid blogs set like that but once in a while, I'll attempt to read blogs with this setting but not a lot. I also find if your header or blog background is too jarring for my eye, I don't visit as often either.
If what you post (your content) doesn't interest me or if you talk about things that I prefer not to read about, then I don't come back. So maybe my interests are pretty narrow but I often find most blogs I read don't just post about one thing so I always find something that interest me. Being a loyal reader shouldn't require hard work to get interested in your content.
There has not been a blog that offended me yet (not that I can remember). There is a blog or two that has a header that I find, not offensive, but maybe a bit on the not family-friendly side. I'm a prude, I suppose. If you curse (use profanity) on your blog, I have no issues with this which I suppose it's contradicting to being a prude but cursing is sometimes required when talking about certain things.
I don't want to say I'm a loyal reader because I don't always comment, I don't always return visits and I don't always remember what I had said on a blog but once I like a blog/blogger, I'll stick to them until they stop blogging or until they decide to change their content to something I don't like.
Do you think blogs need readers? If you're a blogger, do you try to gain readers or do you let fate or whatever decide for you?

Just a Few Complaints
01 - Comment moderation is useless — More bloggers who uses Blogger are moderating their comments which I can understand but I have turned off comment moderations completely because I do not get notices when a comment is in moderation. I get email notices of comments but even if they are in moderation or are marked as spam, I wouldn't know without checking.
I'm not saying this has caused me huge problems but it's a huge annoyance. In my old blog, there were comments that are under moderation for almost a year before I notice it because I didn't get any notice on them. And in this new blog, there were comments that were marked as spam or under moderation for a week or two before I notice it. If I didn't sign into Blogger's dashboard to check the comments, I wouldn't have noticed them for a long while. I don't want readers to think I'm ignoring their comments but it seems I did that without my knowing.
I rather have the comments posted and then check to see if they are spam, than to always have to check the dashboard for comments that may or may not have been marked as spam or may or may not be in comment moderation. (I guess I should mention I do not get a lot of spam or comments which might make my complaints invalid.)
02 - A new spam filter that seems to just sit there — Why can't this new (not sure if it's new but it's new to me) reCAPTCHA feature work behind the scene instead of announcing itself like its doing us, bloggers, a favor? Yes, it's free but we're the ones advertising it unwillingly. reCAPTCHA is supposed to 'protect your site from spam and abuse' according to their website here. Honestly, I'm not sure it's doing anything at all.
03 - Previewing comments was useful so why did they take it away? — You can no longer preview your comments (which was one of Blogger's nice features). I like this preview feature because I like to check for spelling errors or words I had omitted but often I make links in the comment and I want to check if they work because sometimes I mess up the code and with people moderating their comments, I can't check and I'm too lazy to check later since I don't know when the comment will be posted. (Not to say I can't check my comments without a preview (as often there is no preview if I'm commenting on other platforms) but seeing the preview just seems easier for some odd reason.)
04 - It was easier to get to a post before so why is that option removed? (insert a bitter glare here) — Another change, from the front end of the blog, you can no longer click on anything to get to it which was fine but the feature that really irks me not to have now is the pencil link for each post. This feature allows you to get to a post from the front end just by clicking on the pencil image without having to go to the dashboard, search for the post and then click on the post to get to it. It was really convenient for me to make corrections on older posts because I don't have to search for a post. So yes, it's only a few steps to get to a post but it was a really useful tool.
05 - Commenting is hard and too exclusive — Blogger has 3 options for readers to comment: (1) Sign into Google, (2) Anonymous and (3) Name/URL and #2 & 3 does work but it's a pain to use because of the various tests/captcha you have to go through to get a single comment through.
When you are not signed into Google or Blogger, there is this notice in the comment area: "Comment with your Google Account if you’d like to be able to manage your comments in the future. If you comment anonymously, you won’t be able to edit or delete your comment..." - I must say, there is no way to edit your comment after you posted it other than deleting it and adding a new one - that's not a feature worth signing up for. Sure it's nice to have an identity (ie, an icon, a profile page) but not all of us want to sign up just to comment.
It would be nice if Blogger adopts the way Wordpress does comments by using the Name/URL/Email option. Just spaces for people to leave their name, blog link and email and that's it, no signing in or no signing up nor any tests readers have to go through to leave a comment. I don't know much about Wordpress' various commenting options but often, I rarely have any issues with the Name/URL/Email option.
I have notice some people who uses Wordpress also have a Blogger account to make comments on Blogger blogs. I guess it would be fair for me to get a Wordpress account to do the same for those Wordpress blogs that only allows comments if you're signed into Wordpress (and other options like Twitter or Facebook which I don't use).
But at the same time, I'm wondering why anyone should have to sign in or sign up for any service just to leave a comment. It's silly to make such exclusivity since we're making it difficult for readers to comment. There are still people who have no blogs and even people who wants to remain anonymous, to those people, all this signing in, signing out, signing up, makes it nearly impossible to comment.
If you're a blogger, do you moderate your comments? Do you think you should moderate your comments? What do you think of the comment systems of most blogs?

Do word counts matter when it comes to blogging?
I'm only very conscious of word counts because I write fiction and the length matters in fiction. When I post a story for my blog, I try to keep it under 1,000 words which I guess it's a number I'm comfortable with but don't ask me why that is. But most of my stories are on the long side, over 800 words. I try to cut them down but I always seems to end up with a longer piece. If a story is rather long, I try to post it in parts (as in breaking them into three or four posts as oppose to just one long post). And if don't want to break it up into more than one posts, I would put in breaks lines or break the story up so it wouldn't just be one long block of text.
With all that, my posts are still on the long side. I don't expect people to read every word. It's okay if you want to skim a long post. I do it too but most of the times it's because I have no interest in certain things. It's normal to skim the parts you're not interested in right?
What about you? If you're a blogger, do word counts matter? If you're a reader, do you mind long post or does it make a difference to you the length of a post?
Note: This post is 299 words without counting the post title or this notice.

What are your blogging goals for the new year?
This week's Tell Me Something Tuesday is What are your blogging goals for the new year?
You think after all the years of blogging I've done, I would have some type of idea what I am going to post or maybe some sort of schedule or structure but no. I never make blogging goals. I prefer the lazy approach - just blog what I want and when I want. I might do another Draw Something month like last October where I draw every day and posted those drawings. I might also do the Blogging from A to Z challenge in April but I haven't make any decisions. But if I have to answer, I guess my blogging goals for this year is simply to post something once a month and that's that. (If you know of any challenges/memes or events I might participate as a blogger, let me know.)
What are your blogging goals for the new year?

What's the hardest part about blogging for you?
I guess my answer would be actually posting something. It's not that I couldn't do it, it's just that I'm indecisive of what to post. I guess my years of blogging had made me a little lazier or more relax about blogging. Even when I have ideas or even when I have written a post, I don't seem to want to hit that publish button. The only time I seem to be blogging is challenges and memes (such as Words for Wednesday, Top Ten Tuesday) and this one you're reading now. I think they are enough to keep me blogging for a while. I do occasionally post something unrelated to these memes but I do what I have always done, make it up as I go along.
So what about you? What's the hardest part about blogging for you?

Can You Blog Without Obligations?
winter pause |
As bloggers, do we owe readers anything? When we don't post, we're not blogging and they're not reading so what does that mean? I do feel a slight obligation to post something at least once a week which wouldn't be a problem except for no reason, I just don't want to. Not to say I force myself to post but to say, it seems to be getting harder to have enthusiasm for something that I can easily ignore if I choose to. I guess, I'm a slow blogger who seesaw between posting a lot and barely posting and maybe that's not a bad thing, I don't think.
Anyway, I just want to get this little thought out there. What do you think? Do you feel an obligation to post? Do you think posting once a week or even once a month is enough?
