Fiction: The Hunt on Wind Breaker Island 3

Sedge heard Boots' thoughts but she had forgotten he was that foolish. That head injury he got when he was ten trying to save a squirrel had left him with a slow brain but it didn't stop him from saving more animals.
Sedge flipped Boots over slowly and pressed hard on Boots' bleeding shoulder. He tightened his lips. She turned to Jaz. "Give me your scarf!"
Jaz marched over. "It's not my fault. He got in the way. He had better not tell people I did that to him."
"Give me your damm scarf!" Sedge didn't have time for this.
"What? You can't have it. It cost more than your house!" said Jaz.
"You give me that damm scarf or I will break your neck getting it. Which option do you want to take?" Sedge glared at him and scowled. It was true she had a tiny bungalow which was all she could afford but it was hers and she had worked hard to get it.
Jaz untucked the scarf around his neck and held it out with his head turned away. She grabbed it and wrapped it around Boot's wound and over and under his armpit and gave it a good knot.
Boots grunted but he smiled. "I saved a dragon," he said.
"Yes, you did. Is it worth it?" Sedge knew his answer. There was one good thing coming out of this. Among that dragon's gleaming teeth, there was a gold one. Whether it was the same tooth they were all looking for, Sedge was not certain but she was certain the dragon was part cyborg as its head was metal judging by the way the bullets kept making ping sounds while his tongue was drooling saliva. Perhaps it or he, was a cyborg dragon.
Sedge dragged Boots to his tent all the while the other contestants were watching her. They didn't offer to help and she didn't ask. They didn't appear fazed but seemed almost glad Boots got hurt. One less person to compete in the hunt, Sedge supposed.
The sky brightened and Sedge wiped at her forehead. That dragon sure keeps the air cool. It must have been some technology or magic or both.
If only it was yesterday or maybe last week. Back then, Sedge didn't have to worry about getting shot or being attacked by a dragon. She almost regretted destroying Jaz's ship. If she had the time, she might have done more damage but all she did was took the ship apart and threw the engine in the water. It wasn't as if Jaz did much sailing. He just liked showing off his large and expensive things. The image of the ship in pieces made her smiled but then she lost her smile. It was a dumb thing to do and there was no undoing it. But Boots. That mistake she did wished she had not made. She could have thrown the gun into the water or perhaps empty out the chamber or even crush it to pieces with her robotic hand but she didn't think. That was the trouble with Sedge. She was smart but didn't always think first before doing anything. Boots was dumb but he always took the time to think. Some girls thought Boots was husband material if only he was a little smarter and lost that monkey-like laughter. Always whenever he was asked about marriage, Boots' reply was, he was waiting for his own Princess Charming.
Sedge walked pass February 'Fab' Wednesday, a girl she had gone to school with and Jaz's new girlfriend and partner on the island. Fab gave Sedge a subtle smile. Of course Fab wasn't wearing sweat-stain clothes or smelled like she had a workout. Flowers was what Fab always smelled like. Fab had beauty that was generously gifted to her - smooth, pale skin sprinkled with a few graceful freckles, light green eyes, bright red hair and a quiet disposition. Sedge on the other hand, well, no one would call her lovely. Stubborn was what they would say. Stubborn, loud and a little too impulsive - three things Sedge's father had often recited whenever Sedge got into trouble. With her tan skin and being taller than most men, even Boots, Sedge wouldn't argue she was appealing but at least, she wasn't bad looking if she dressed up but she preferred practical clothing.
Near Fab was Steve Austin and his partner and brother Austin Steve. Who knew why those two brothers had such names. They both wore their long gray-black hair tied back matched by their long beards and thick eyebrows that covered most of their eyes. Sedge didn't remember which name go with which even though one was tall and the other was half the tall one's size. They sometimes reminded her of gnomes who had forgotten their age as they liked to dressed like they were still children with their colorful overalls. Beside the brothers were the young married couple, Davis and Daisy Hatter, who always dressed in black and white. Davis, with his dark skin, wore white while Daisy, with her pale skin, wore black. Boots had thought they reminded him of black and white cookies.
Once Boots was in his tent and appeared a little comfortable, Sedge stepped out.
    "Well?" Jaz said.
"He's going to live but I need your butler. Bring it over here." Sedge kept her arms loose at her side to appear less threatening although being taller and bigger than Jaz probably didn't help.
Jaz crossed his arms over his chest. "So are you asking for my help, Yang Yang?"
Sedge scoffed. If that idiot sailor hadn't dropped her medical kit in the water right before they landed on the island, she wouldn't need Jaz's help. And besides, the butler was a robotic machine that could do a better job at stitching someone up than she ever will. Sedge couldn't quite get why people did not liked biomechatronic but it was fine for them to use robots to do their biddings. "If you don't bring your butler here, I'll tell Boots to get a lawyer and press some charges."
Jaz laughed. "I don't think so. Everyone here will be a witness to his dumb move. No way they are going to put me in jail."
That over confident attitude of Jaz had always appealed to Sedge but now it irritated her. "Okay. I guess I'll have to beat you up for it. Come on, I'll let you get the first hit." She held her hands behind her back. "But then again, I think I'll break your nose first and move on from there. It seems fair considering you owe me one." Right after he dumped her, he had her arrested for trespassing just because she left some dirt on his car when she stomped through the front yard on her way out and that was by accident. Mostly.
Jaz loosened his arms to his side. "You're not going to kill me, right? I've got witnesses."
Around them, the other contestants were watching but they appeared nonchalant.
Sedge smiled. "That's okay. I don't mind going to jail for your murder if it saves Boots. Well?" She knew that Jaz knew she would it do.
"Fab, honey, get the butler." Jaz pursed his lips together and glared at Sedge.
    Sedge smiled. "And hurry."
"And hurry it up." Jaz added.
