What if you keep writing and writing but never finish any of the writing projects you had started? Even given all the free time, the one thing I'm not doing is finishing. From time to time, I can work on a project for days, weeks even months and then it just fizzle out. Mostly, the motivation is just not there. When I get struck and stop writing, I kind of forget to continue.
It's easier to start than to finish - at least, it seems to me. I guess you can say I lack motivation and because there is no one chasing me to finish anything, I got lazy. I have way more unfinished stories than finished ones. But finishing isn't the end because there's more editing and more re-writing so maybe I'm avoiding that? Who knows? Maybe I will finish most of my writing some day.
Do you worry you'll never finish your writings?

"It's easier to start than to finish" Oh yes! I have a zillion unfinished tals of Susan, of Stone age-people, of me and my family, of people I knew, and would have like to have known. The only story I ever really finished is the story of Mary, Allan and the end of the world.
ReplyDeleteBut like you I say some day ...
By the way ... where did you get this IWSG subject? I can find only: January 8 question - Describe someone you admired when you were a child. Did your opinion of that person change when you grew up?
Charlotte: It's easy to say some day but let's hope we actually do finish and maybe saying it out loud (even in a blog) would give us some encouragement to finish or at least that's thought.
DeleteI pick the subject because I have tons of unfinished writings and I want to see what others think. I did know the IWSG question but I wasn't interested in answering.
Thank you for coming by. Have a lovely day.
I hear you. I rarely finish, and sometimes struggle to start.
ReplyDeleteElephant's Child: It's good to know others are in the same boat.

ReplyDeleteI think you could say that writing is never finished. Any writer can look at something they "finished" years ago and find ways to change and improve it. That's a part of the craft, I think. I find when I get intimidated by my work, it works to take it a little at a time. Just write the next sentence, or the next paragraph. The next day, do the same thing. Give yourself small goals. 250 words a day, 100 words a day. If you stick to your routine, you will "finish."
ReplyDeleteI've got boxes of unfinished books (I'll have to get them out some day and see if they spark my interest again). When I started out, I loved to write just the parts of the book that excited me then . . . moved on. Until a former teacher saw me at an art fair and asked what I was up to. I told her I was a writer. She looked down her nose and drawled, "That's nice." I was so insulted I pulled out my manual typewriter (yes, I'm a dinosaur!) determined to finish a book. That one didn't sell . . . but the next 70-some have!
