Book Rants - April 2025

It seems suddenly a lot of Mary Higgins Clark's books are available as ebooks at my library so I decided to read all that are available. She really is the queen of suspense but I have to admit, sometimes it does seems like I'm reading the same book only with different characters but they kept me entertained so I'll keep reading them. I do find Clark's book endings almost always ends in marriage or engagement so that's a bit of fun to note. Here are the books I read last month.

01 - Where are you now? by Mary Higgins Clark
What's it about: missing people, murders, grieving, money
This was really good. One can think of so many solutions why a person would go missing for years but when you read on, it became clear what it was. Still, I think the culprit/murderer seemed like a surprise but then again, I had listed almost all the male characters as suspects. This ends with a marriage.

02 - You belong to me by Mary Higgins Clark
What's it about: serial murders, cruises, rings
This was good though the end seemed too short. And sometimes it just seemed everything is scattered and taking a bit too long to get the pieces together. But I think because there are so many perspectives, that's why it feels like that.

03 - On the streets where you live by Mary Higgins Clark
What's it about: old case with new ones, serial murders, reincarnation
For some reason, there is a character I immediately started to hate and he was the culprit which is maybe how it's written. But I enjoyed this one.

04 - No place like home by Mary Higgins Clark
What's it about: old case, murders, people doing a lot of lying and being prejudiced
The sudden revelation of a character seemed, well, sudden, but it did make sense though I'm disappointed there wasn't even a single hint that there was anything wrong with that character. Also, I'm sad the most annoying character didn't get killed because she sounded like a liability. This ends with a marriage.

05 - Before I say goodbye by Mary Higgins Clark
What's it about: psychics, fraud, murders, past crimes
There was not much suspense at the start. The main character Nell doesn't believe in psychics even though she had evidence of her own abilities. And Nell went striaght into danger even knowing she would be. She could have done a senseable thing and let the police know what she knew but no, she had to go right into danger but I kind of expected it.

06 - Daddy's little girl by Mary Higgins Clark
What's it about: past crimes, families, redemption
This was okay. More like a redemption story than suspense. This ends in a marriage.

07 - The Melody lingers on by Mary Higgins Clark
What's it about: money fraud, spying, victims
This is a book where I keep thinking 'stupid idiot!' a few times. I guess some people does not like to listen to other people's advices or even cold-hard facts about certain people. I suppose if you're desperate for love, you would ignore things that you shouldn't, until you almost got killed.

08 - Just take my heart by Mary Higgins Clark
What's it about: murder trial, stalking
It started a bit boring but then it got better. The trial part which is really most of the book and it's a bit boring. And some of the coincidences are expected I guess.

09 - As time goes by (Alvirah & Willy #10) by Mary Higgins Clark
What's it about: murder trial, adoption, inheritance
I didn't realized this is part of a series. This was a bit dull but it got better after a time. This ends with a with a marriage.

10 - All by myself, alone (Alvirah & Willy #11) by Mary Higgins Clark
What's it about: curise trip, jewlrey theif, murder
I didn't realized this is part of a series as I pretty much don't notice until later. This was okay. This ends with an engagement.

11 - Kiss the girls and make them cry by Mary Higgins Clark
What's it about: sexual assualt, murders, coverups
I didn't quite like how the focus was so much on the bad guys but this is so we can get the full story. This ends with an engagement.

Have you read any good books lately?

    😂

With all these marriages and engagements, I assume there's a lot of romantic content?

    1. Roberta R.: Some character's actions gets such reactions because they are really stupid.

MHC's books are mostly mystery and suspense but there is some dating in the books but not long focus on them. I just find it amusing that they end with marriage/wedding/engagements when that's not the focus.

  5. Not an author I have read.
From memory (unreliable) in many of Agatha Christie's one of the happy young couple is the culprit.

    1. Elephant's Child: I think I recall reading a Christie's book with a couple as the culprit but I don't remember the title.
