Not much blogging this month. I just didn't have the motivation for it. But I celebrated four years staying at this blog. (You can read about it here. ) And I had a giveaway which I think was a bad idea but sticking to it but I have extended the date to enter. (Check it out here.)
In between, I read some murder mysteries. Here are the books I read this month.
01 - New leash on death by Olivia Blacke
What's it about: ghosts, murder, roommates
The back and forth between two perspectives kind of delay the story but this was a decent read.
02 - Fire will freeze by Margaret Millar
What's it about: murder, stranded people
This started out amusing and ended somewhat decent. So many viewpoints and it seemed rather too short.
03 - Rose's last summer by Margaret Millar
What's it about: death, money, schemes
This was slightly quirky and the mystery is intriguing but the ending is one long explanation which close the case but a bit of a letdown.
04 - Beast in view by Margaret Millar
What's it about: phone calls, deaths, mental stress
This was good, kept me reading.
05 - A stranger in my grave by Margaret Millar
What's it about: dream, death
This started well and it kept me reading but the ending was a bit lacking.
06 - The woman in the library by Sulari Gentill
What's it about: murder, romance, convicted killers
I first borrowed this book, started to read it and then quit it. And then I saw another book with the same title but different cover and being how I don't remember author names, I borrowed it again. And again, I thought to quit but then decided I should finish it.
This started okay but I didn't like the format of excerpts from a novel and letters critiquing it and it feels like I'm reading a novel and on the side someone is reviewing/recapping it, adding unneeded opinions and suggestions.
The title is enticing but no, not much happens in the library except at the beginning and even then, it was suggestive. It's really more like a romance or a bunch of people meeting and hanging out and they sort of try to solve the murder but isn't doing too much except talking.
I think the main character/narrator is stupid for a mystery writer because she immediately judge someone as guilty or innocent without all the evidence or I guess the worst is that she never suspected the real culprit, not even a little.
The ending is quick and I think the reason for the murder is kind of a letdown. That is, all the mystery led to that end? Anyway, I finished this book and now I like to forget it.
~ Books unfinished ~07 - The girl who died by Ragnar Jónasson and Victoria Cribb (Translator)
What's it about: murder, isolation, tiny town
Quit at: 25%
It's very atmospheric, that is, you feel the bleakness, the emptiness, the loneliness and the darkness (lack of street lights at night) and yet, a bit dull, moving at a glacier pace. And the killer's viewpoint is sprung up now and then does make it less boring but it's still boring. This is a thriller but there wasn't any thrills, just a lot atmosphere. And the title, I have no idea who the girl who died is. I didn't care about a single character not even the main character. I just find this too dull to continue.
Have you read any good books lately?
I see a theme in what you've been reading -- murder and death. I have to be in the right mood for these subjects but it's hard to avoid them if you're in the mood for a mystery.
ReplyDeleteI just finished reading my first Romantasy novel. It involves a Centaur-Huntsman and a Warrior-Priestess.It was a fun read actually. Now I'm reading the sequel.
